Prelude

After graduating from high school, I started to think which university to study, for me choosing Wuhan University was one of the best choices I had ever made in my life. WHU is said to be one of the most famous and beautiful universities in China.

My time in Wuhan University was like a journey full of excitement and surprise. I met so many amazing people from all over the world; with various cultures, each of them was unique. My mind is still fresh about the excellent teachers who once assisted me in my academic studies. All these priceless experience will be enshrined in my memory to be cherished for the rest of my life.

Meet new people

If I compared my life to a book, attending the university was like a new and different chapter for me. I had the opportunity to communicate with people from various cultural backgrounds, which had broadened my horizon, enriched my knowledge and even shaped my character. However, at the very beginning, I was confused, not knowing how to navigate my life in a cultural context that differed a lot from my own. With the help of my school mates and teachers from Wuhan University, I gradually overcame a variety of difficulties and tried my best to meet new people. I was really jealous about those students who had the chance to join in diverse communities. There is no doubt that for international students in WHU, you can always find the communities that will interest you and you can’t miss them. I highly recommend that you should take part in the cultural festival event where you can get the opportunity to discover unique culture and meet many kind-hearted people coming around the world.

Be open-minded and accept the challenges

It is not always easy to live in China when you come for the first time. In order to fit into the campus life, you need to adjust yourself: be open-minded and accept the challenges. For instance, you may don’t know how to use chopsticks in a Chinese restaurant. What you need to do is be humble and learn from the people around you. Chinese people is renowned for being friendly and kind, so if you get any questions about their cultures, you can summon up your courage and ask them in a polite manner. There is a Chinese saying “嘴甜朋友多” , which means a person who is honey-tongued is likely to make many friends. Once you have taken that first step out of your comfort zone, you will meet so many great people whom you can share experience and grasp the chance to learn new things.

Epilogue

As an international student studying in China, you should learn professional knowledge and Chinese culture; you should also bear in mind: you are a cultural bridge between China and your home country. I have to admit that the knowledge and experience I got from WHU actually brought me to stand where I am today. I do hope there will come a day when I can return to Luojia Mountain to meet my previous teachers and take a walk around the campus!
